THE UNIQUE EARTH
The Sun is at the center of a whole family of planets. Close to it are the inner planets -Mercury ,Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Mercury, closest to the Sun, is a cratered rock
not much larger than our Moon. It is a blisteringly hot cinder of a world totally incapable of supporting life of any kind. Mercury
has an extremely thin asmosphere that contains largely sodium and potassium.
Venus is the next planet out from the Sun and is about the same size as the Earth. In contrast to Mercury, Venus is clothed in a thick atmosphere of mainly carbon dioxide. At the surface the pressure of the atmosphere is nearly 100 times that on Earth. The thick blanket of gases
acts like a greenhouse and traps the Sun´s heat
and gives a surface temperature as high as 480°C (900°) F. There can be no life of any kind on the planet Venus.
Mars, the first planet beyond us, is smaller
than the Earth. Mars also has an atmosphere but only a very-low-pressure one. Again, the atmosphere consists largely of carbon dioxide.
Water exists on the surface, but only in the form of ice at the poles. Pressures and temperatures are never high enough to make all the ice melt.
The whole planet is a red, lifeless desert.
Beyond Mars lie the outer planets -the gas
giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These are far langer than the Earth, and their outer visible structure consists of the
gases hydrogen and helium. They are so unlike
the Earth and the other inner planets, in
structure and composition, that it is difficult to
make comparisons. Beyond them, the outermost planet Pluto is so distant that it is
something of a mystery altogether.
Among all the planets, only the Earth is of such a size and at such a distance from the Sun that its surface is neither very cold nor very hot. Because of the temperature and pressure,
water can exist in all its three forms -as gas,
liquid, and solid. These conditions also allow plants and animals to reproduce and evolve. In short, Earth is the only planet that has the conditions that support life.

IV.
I.
IV.
a) Éter b) Óxido nitroso c) Ciclopropano d) Cloroformo
